Volunteer Opportunities

Promotoras graduates, 2012

Be a Promotora de Salud (Health Promoter)

The Promotores Program is a volunteer, community-based health education program. Based on Paulo Freire’s popular education model, our training curriculum uses proven methods for teaching volunteers how to become leaders in the community, communicate health information, and be advocates for the rights of their family and neighbors. In order to become a Promotora, participants must be 16 or older, complete at least 13 of the 16 basic training sessions, and commit to at least 5 hours of volunteer service per month.

Some of the ways Promotoras spread TVHC’s message of health and help their community are:

  • By giving health information at health fairs and other community events
  • By providing health presentations in homes, schools, and community centers
  • By helping direct community members to local resources

In return, Promotoras obtain valuable skills and knowledge through comprehensive training and volunteer experience. In addition, TVHC is often able to offer additional bonuses for participation, such as gift cards.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Promotora, contact Carlos Londono at (510) 471-5880 ext. 3712, or clondono@tvhc.org.

 Be a TVHC General Volunteer

There is also an ongoing need for volunteers to help with administrative tasks and special events. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, to learn about community health care, and to gain valuable work experience. Volunteers may commit 4 hours or more per week on the days they are available. TVHC may be able to offer academic credit for volunteer hours completed.

To find out about other volunteer opportunities in the organization, please contact us at volunteers@tvhc.org. If you are a student seeking academic credit, please include your school information in your message.
